To Conjure something is to pull it out of thin air, to make it real. To use magic to manifest what it is one imagines.
Through my work, I conjure your visions- and my own.
We are each powerful manifestors, bringing into our lives what we need and want. By putting my work out in the world, I am manifesting my own dreams and visions.
Cloaks are not the only thing included in the Conjury. I make art and comics, do conflict exploration and reconciliation, design and consult on costuming, offer myself as a birth doula, love creating landscaping design, and I am learning more skills by the day. Each of these things conjures a little more beauty, a little more peace, and hopefully helps better our world in little ways.
For me, the word “Conjury” brings up a very specific idea of a moment at a peddlers cart. You ask the peddler “By chance, do you have this very specific thing, in red- not orange, with stripes, not spots?” and with a twinkle in their eye, they disappear into their incredibly overloaded cart, full of more things than you could see in a lifetime. After some clinking and shuffling, they return- with exactly what you were thinking of. How on earth did they have such a specific thing?! It’s like it was made for you, and this exact moment!
Well, in a way- it was!
One of my favorite things about selling cloaks, is putting them on people. Thats it! And sometimes, theres a special moment that happens, a kind of “Ah Hah!” when you see the right cloak on the right person. I didn’t make it with you in mind, but it is clearly Your Cloak. There is some wonder in that, some mystery, and a moment of “does it exist? will it be there?” Yes, it does, and it will.
